FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is an invention marathon. Programmers, designers, builders and more come together to learn, build, and share their creations throughout the weekend. Hackathons are not limited to computer science majors — anyone who has an interest in technology and is eager to learn can participate in a hackathon. Not to be confused with illegal and unauthorized programming, "hacking" in this context means quickly and intelligently creating a real application that others can use.

Does it cost anything?

Our hackathon is completely free! You will have the opportunity to win prizes, attend free workshops, develop your skills, and meet other hackers.

I'm new to hackathons, can I still come?

Yes! This event is open to students of all levels and backgrounds. Students new to programming are encouraged to attend, hone their skills, and learn something new.

Will it be in-person or online?

Hack the Heights will be held in-person for BC students only at Stokes South!

I've never seen a computer in my life... what can I even do at a hackathon?

While most participants will have some level of programming ability, people of all backgrounds can contribute. We offer a number of beginner-oriented workshops and materials to help get everyone on the same page!

Am I allowed to work on a pre-existing project?

While you are allowed to work on an existing project, you are highly encouraged to begin something new the day of the event. Rapid innovation is in the spirit of a hackathon, and only new hacks will be considered for prizes.

Sooo... who decides the winners?

Judges from BC and our sponsors will determine prize winners based on the criteria of creativity, complexity, and utility of your hack.

Are there any rules?

We want to ensure a positive experience for all participants. We encourage you to read the MLH Code of Conduct.
